The Marketing and Communication Division is searching for a Director of Research Communications. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. In this new position, you will report to the Sr. Director of News and Media Relations, and develop and lead the strategy around research and economic development communications activities in alignment with CMU's research priorities.
Core responsibilities will include:
In coordination with the campus Vice President of Research, develop communications and marketing strategy to raise the visibility of the CMU research enterprise;
Craft and promote research news through proper channel and platforms;
Direct and implement research news and outreach strategies to support the university's research and economic development initiatives;
Oversee website content for research news;
Organize and supervise research communications staff and freelancers;
Supervise a three-person research marketing and communications team;
Support corporate and foundation relation communication activities;
Develop and maintain relationships with sponsor organizations and unit/research communicators;
Coordinate and collaborate with the senior director of news and media relations on the innovative use of social media, media relations and storytelling;
Newsroom and campaign style planning to ensure long-term success of message penetration;
Work closely with Associate Vice President of Content and Communications and senior staff to shape key communications planning and the most effective communications team, and to ensure consistent messaging across channels; and
Collaborate across the university with college and school communicators to ensure correct positioning of the research community.

You will demonstrate:
Experience in writing essential communications & marketing plans;
Deep understanding of content and content marketing;
Science, research and technology writing experience and the ability to make complex material easily digestible to a variety of audiences;
Strong writer and editor/ability to write for different audiences utilizing different forms of storytelling;
Work independently and effectively, and manage multiple projects at a time in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
A high level of integrity, trustworthiness, respect and team collaboration; and
Research skills and business insight with a fluency in topical news and culture.
Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, business, or other relevant field; Master's highly desired.
Minimum of eight years as a leader in multi-channel content creation.
Management experience required; ability to lead and inspire a campus of content creators and creative personnel to achieve goals.
Ability to work after hours and on weekends when appropriate.
