The nurses of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) in the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Cancer Center have the opportunity to deliver cutting-edge treatments to a group of patients that they follow closely and with whom they are able to develop unique relationships. Our nurses have made significant contributions to clinical trials for drugs that are now FDA approved and standard of care for the treatment of cancer throughout the world. This Monday – Friday, daytime position offers a great deal of independence to manage the care of your patients in a team setting, as well as the opportunity for professional development in a highly specialized career track. As a Research Nurse in the CRU, you will become a member of a very collaborative multi-disciplinary team consisting of Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Social Workers, Pharmacists, Scientists, Laboratory Personnel and Research Coordinators who work together to develop innovative approaches to the treatment of cancer. In this position you will challenge yourself on a daily basis as you rapidly develop your clinical skills and medical knowledge base by working with the newest cancer treatments, some of which are the first use in humans. As a Clinical Research Nurse C /D you will have the opportunity to independently coordinate, with the support of your study team, state of the art clinical trials, including consenting, screening and enrolling eligible subjects, managing the treatment of patients throughout their participation in the study including education about any adverse effects they might experience, provide oversight and coordination of research testing and follow-up, as well as, in some cases, directly administer novel research medications. You will monitor the care and progress of your patients, the treatment of any side effects and the status of your patients throughout their participation in the study, in addition to providing patient/family education and support. Most valuable of all, you will form lasting relationships with patients and families that last for years as you delivered the cutting edge drug that impacted their life. In addition, in this position, you may assist in the writing and development of investigator-initiated protocols, participate in and possibly lead working groups within the CRU that will maximize the efficiency and quality of research performed within the program, including developing SOP’s, educate and train clinical and research staff, serve as a resource for junior staff, serve as a resource for the development of study orders, provide input into the development of efficient work flows and attend any meetings related to your studies. As a Clinical Research Nurse D, you may have the opportunity to develop and lead working groups within the CRU that will maximize the efficiency and quality of research performed within the program, including developing SOPs. You will work closely with the Investigators to select appropriate studies and develop plans to maximize enrollment in the team’s study portfolio. Additionally, you will be among the first to review upcoming protocols and establish the team plan for effective implementation of the study. This may include working with and training the clinical staff and serving as an ongoing resource for both research and clinical staff. The typical hiring salary range for a Clinical Research Nurse C in the Cancer Center is $75,000 to $84,000 and the typical hiring salary range for a Clinical Research Nurse D in the Cancer Center is $80,000 to $90,000, depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications.
