The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 250 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking an Associate Director of Marketing. We are looking for a creative and forward thinker, someone who has the ability to lead talented people, is analytical and strategic, while also diving right into the execution of our marketing campaigns.
Description of Position:
The Associate Director, Marketing will help Cal Athletics shape its communications strategy to develop a single view of the customer, refine the customer journey, and deliver personalized content across all channels and devices. This position will be responsible for developing and leading the department’s overall email marketing plan to help create, launch, manage, and optimize segmented and targeted programs in support of demand generation, retention, and customer loyalty. In addition, this position will also be responsible for tracking email metrics, ROI, reporting on successes, and optimizing campaigns for future success. Along with the positions role in email marketing, the Associate Director, Marketing will lead the grassroots marketing effort campaign plans engage with additional stakeholders.
Maintains a comprehensive email and marketing automation editorial calendar in order to proactively produce content appropriate for IA channels.
Mines data for opportunities to convert, retain, and nurture leads, prospects, customers, and partners.
Extracts data and key learnings from analytics and reports to create conversion campaigns.
Defines and achieves KPI metrics for lead conversion and customer retention.
Reports on all marketing program performance to leadership team members and other internal units.
In conjunction with Learfield, lead of development of Cal Street Team to provide grassroots marketing efforts for Cal in the Bay Area. Hire team members, develop events calendar, coordinate schedules for team, ensure promotional materials are readily available, track metrics of success for team.
Plan and execute engagement/promotional plans for assigned teams/programs. Serve as “Show Director” for their specific sport responsibilities. Research new and different promotional ideas to drive attendance to games.
Coordinates efforts cross-functionally with other internal units.
Builds relationships with outside (non-campus affiliated) companies and organizations, as necessary.
Other marketing responsibilities as assigned.
Works game days/nights.
Some travel may be required.
2+ years of marketing, digital communications, PR, brand management, or digital advertising experience.
Knowledge of email marketing solutions (Neolane, ExactTarget, Lyris, Constant Contact, Convio, or equivalent) and/or marketing automation platforms (Adobe Campaign, Responsys, Marketo, Eloqua, or equivalent).
Ability to develop email flows, business logic, and reporting in marketing automation system.
Excellent copywriting and content creation skills, and keen visual sense.
Understanding of how images and videos define a company’s brand.
Experience using adobe creative suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver) for graphic design and email template creation.
Knowledge of HTML creation and troubleshooting.
Experience managing media buys, specifically with digital and social networks.
Experience in managing mobile communication and its importance in driving engagement, web traffic, sales, etc.
Proven ability to document processes and procedures associated with marketing automation or email campaigns and strategies.
Strong quantitative analytical ability - can take complex ideas and present them in a manner that is easy to consume and share.
Excellent project management skills with the ability to drive results and projects to completion.
Clear written and verbal communication skills and strong presentation abilities.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent training/experience.
Strong interpersonal communication and political acumen skills.
Knowledge of applicable NCAA and Pac-12 rules and regulations.
Knowledge of Neolane email marketing system
Knowledge of Salesforce.com or other CRM solution and its functionality.
Knowledge of the campus and department, including its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, and infrastructure.
Knowledge of the department’s products and services.
